Finding Peace When You Don’t Know What Comes Next

Key Takeaways:

✓ Pregnancy often teaches us that some of life’s most important moments cannot be rushed or controlled.

✓ Feeling anxious about the future is normal, but fear does not have to define your pregnancy.

✓ God’s timing is rarely the same as our timing, yet Scripture reminds us that He remains faithful through every season of waiting.

✓ Medical knowledge can help explain what is happening in your body, while faith offers hope when answers are still unfolding.

✓ Learning to trust God one day at a time can transform pregnancy from a season of fear into a season of growing confidence.

Learning to Trust God’s Timing During Pregnancy

Few seasons of life reveal how little control we truly have quite like pregnancy. The moment a pregnancy test turns positive, most women begin imagining the months ahead. Questions arrive almost immediately. Will this pregnancy be healthy? Will the first ultrasound be reassuring? Will my baby continue to grow normally? What will labor be like? Will everything turn out all right?

These questions are not signs of weak faith. They are part of being human. Every expectant mother is stepping into a future she cannot fully see, and that uncertainty naturally creates both excitement and concern.

As an obstetrician, I cared for thousands of women during pregnancy. Some pregnancies progressed exactly as expected. Others surprised us with challenges that no one anticipated. Medicine taught me that we can monitor, diagnose, and treat many conditions, but it also reminded me that no physician can promise exactly how every pregnancy will unfold. There are moments when careful medical care is essential, and there are moments when the only honest answer is, “Let’s continue watching together.”

Those moments of waiting can feel incredibly long.

The Bible is filled with people who also struggled with waiting. Abraham waited decades for God’s promise. Hannah waited through years of unanswered prayers. Elizabeth waited until later in life before becoming pregnant with John the Baptist. Even Mary, after receiving the astonishing news that she would give birth to the Savior, still had to walk day by day through a normal pregnancy without knowing everything that lay ahead.

Pregnancy often becomes one of God’s classrooms for teaching trust. Not because He enjoys uncertainty, but because trust can only grow when we continue walking even though we cannot yet see the entire path ahead.

When We Want Answers Before They Exist

Modern medicine has transformed pregnancy care. Ultrasounds allow us to watch babies grow. Blood tests provide valuable information. Genetic screening helps identify certain conditions much earlier than ever before. Fetal monitoring, advanced imaging, and specialized maternal-fetal medicine have improved outcomes for countless families.

These advances are tremendous blessings.

Yet every technology has limits.

No ultrasound can show every detail of a child’s future personality. No blood test can predict every challenge that family life may bring. No physician can guarantee that every pregnancy will follow the exact timetable parents hope for.

Many women discover that the greatest source of anxiety is not what they know—it is what they do not yet know.

That waiting between appointments can seem endless. The days before hearing a heartbeat. The weeks until the anatomy ultrasound. The time spent waiting for laboratory results. The final days before labor begins.

Waiting stretches the imagination. Fear often fills empty spaces with worst-case scenarios.

Faith gently calls us to fill those spaces differently.

Instead of assuming the worst, Scripture repeatedly invites us to remember the character of God. The One who created this tiny life knows every heartbeat before we ever hear it through a Doppler monitor. He is not surprised by tomorrow. He is already there.

That truth does not remove every uncertainty, but it changes how we live with uncertainty.

Instead of carrying tomorrow’s burdens today, we are invited to trust God with today while He faithfully carries tomorrow.

God Is Already Working While You Are Waiting

One of the unique challenges of the first trimester is that so much of pregnancy happens beyond your sight. During these early weeks, you may not yet look pregnant. You may not have heard your baby’s heartbeat. Your first ultrasound may still be days or weeks away. Even though your life has changed forever, there are moments when it can feel as though you are waiting for proof that everything is progressing as it should. That waiting can be emotionally exhausting, especially when your heart longs for reassurance.

Yet the remarkable truth is that while you are waiting, your baby is growing at an astonishing pace. Long before anyone can see a rounded abdomen or feel a tiny kick, God is quietly overseeing one of the most extraordinary acts of creation. Tiny cells are dividing with breathtaking precision. Your baby’s heart begins to beat. The brain, spinal cord, eyes, arms, legs, and every major organ system begin forming according to an intricate design that no human engineer could duplicate. As an obstetrician, I never lost my sense of wonder watching those earliest weeks unfold. Even after thousands of pregnancies, I was continually reminded that life itself is a gift entrusted to us by God.

The first trimester teaches a lesson that reaches far beyond pregnancy. Some of God’s greatest work happens before we can see any outward evidence of it. A seed grows beneath the soil long before green leaves appear. The sunrise begins before the first rays of light reach the horizon. In much the same way, God is often accomplishing His purposes long before we recognize them. His work is not dependent upon our ability to observe it. He remains faithful whether we can see His hand or not.

This truth becomes especially comforting on days when anxiety begins to whisper discouraging questions. What if something is wrong? What if this pregnancy doesn’t continue? What if I receive bad news at my next appointment? Those thoughts are common during the first trimester, and they do not mean your faith is failing. They simply reveal how deeply you already love the tiny life growing within you. Love naturally wants certainty, but pregnancy rarely provides all the answers as quickly as we would like.

Scripture gently reminds us that our confidence is not built upon knowing every detail of tomorrow. Our confidence is built upon knowing the character of God. He is the Creator of both mother and child. He is not surprised by what lies ahead because He already sees the entire journey. While you wait for your next appointment, your next ultrasound, or your next milestone, God is not waiting. He is already present in tomorrow, faithfully caring for you today just as He will care for you then.

The prophet Isaiah beautifully describes this steady faithfulness when he writes, “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you” (Isaiah 26:3). Notice that the promise is not that every question will immediately be answered or that every concern will instantly disappear. The promise is peace—a quiet confidence that grows as our hearts learn to rest in God’s unchanging character rather than in changing circumstances.

Learning to trust God’s timing does not happen all at once. It grows one day at a time. Each day that you choose hope over fear, each prayer you whisper while waiting for an appointment, and each moment you place your unanswered questions into God’s hands becomes another step in a deeper journey of faith. The first trimester, with all of its uncertainty, may feel like an unlikely place for spiritual growth. Yet it is often here, before you can fully see what God is doing, that He begins teaching one of pregnancy’s most enduring lessons: His faithfulness has never depended upon our ability to see the entire plan.

For many mothers, the greatest miracle of the first trimester is not only that a baby is being formed. It is that, quietly and patiently, God is also shaping a mother’s heart to trust Him more deeply than ever before.
